I’ve seen the Deadpool trailer.
Yes, it’s basically Van Wilder with guns. (No, I’ve never seen Van Wilder.) Yes, there’s a lot of violence. The hyper-violence would be enough to give this film an R-rating. However, the filmmakers went one step further and added a lot of cursing to the movie.
I feel the cursing is unnecessary.
I’m not squeamish about cursing. I was in the Marines for 8 years. I’ve heard a lot of cursing, name calling, and the like. I’ve heard a lot of put-downs. (“The best part of you slid down your momma’s thigh, didn’t it?” Or, my favorite: “You’re stupid, son. Your momma should’ve swallowed.”) That doesn’t bother me.
However, the unnecessary cursing is just one more thing that’s making me skip this movie. (The first is that I refuse to put more money into Liefeld’s pocket, and the second is that I have yet to pay money to see Van Wilder in theaters. I don’t see these two things changing anytime soon.)
You can say a lot of things and get a PG-13 rating. With the violence, you can get an R. Add a few sexual references (i.e. “mewling quim”) and you’re able to take that into a solid R—without the need to result in banal vulgarities. (When I saw the Avengers, and when Loki called Natasha a mewling quim, I nearly jumped out of my seat. No one else had any reaction because they didn’t understand, which helps to make my point about the level of vocabulary in America.)
The trailer looks like fun. There’s no storyline yet except for the origin story, but it looks like fun. (I’m wondering if they’re going to throw X-Men Origins: Wolverine out from the continuity of this film—even though the pre-trailer trailer mentions it.) I’ll be waiting for more trailers to hit. I still won’t pay money to see this—and I won’t allow anyone else to pay for me to see it, either. Maybe I’ll catch it on Netflix or something later, but this will be one of the few Marvel movies I refuse to watch in theaters.
