A lot has been made over Airboy #2 and the views espoused over the transgender community.
I have no dog in that fight. I don’t know anyone who’s transgender. I don’t care about another person’s sexuality one way or the other. I know about mine, I know about my wife’s, and that’s all I really care about.
In that not-caring about another person’s sexuality is the keen understanding that I accept their sexuality. I don’t have any religious trappings to tell me something is “right” or “wrong”. Although I grew up in the 80s and there were phrases used/said at that time that were definitely derogatory toward the homosexual community, I can say that we’ve come a long way from where we were then.
We’ve finally got marriage legal in America. And now, even though we’ve recently had a lot of people coming up as transgender, while Laverne Cox has done a lot to raise awareness, this didn’t really come to a head for us in America until Olympic gold medal winner Bruce Jenner became Caitlyn Jenner. Once that happened, we really had to deal with it as a country.
While a lot of hash has been made over that, I think we’re coming through it fine.
Hopefully, we’re getting to a place where we understand that what happens in someone else’s bedroom is none of our business. Hopefully, we’re getting to a place where we can love each other, with no divides in gender. Traditional gender roles have definitely changed, and while we have yet to have true parity, we’re starting to reach for it.
Transgender is the new black. It’s on everyone’s mind and on everyone’s lips. It will be here for a couple of years, but it will eventually be replaced by something else. There are a lot of sexual hang-ups we have here in America. (We can’t show naked breasts on television, but it’s okay to show someone being killed. Why is a show like Criminal Minds still on television? It’s Saw, but just like the television version of RL Stine’s Goosebumps, it doesn’t cross the line. It’s Saw-lite.)
What’s next on America’s sexual horizon? I don’t know. But it’s coming, and it’s going to cause a stir.
