There are some things that just need to stop. One of those things is One Million Moms.
There’s a petition by this group online to stop the production of Lucifer on Fox. Now, I’m against bad tv as much as the next person, but some things that could be interesting should actually be given a shot.
That’s a joke. One Million Moms isn’t against bad television. It’s basically a website of the American Family Association, which is a Christian fundamentalist group. It’s also been labeled a hate group by a well-known legal advocacy group, the Southern Poverty Law Center. So, there’s that. And really, I hate the misappropriation of the number “one million”, because the AFA has only about 180k members.
Maybe I’m too liberal in my thinking, but if you don’t want to watch something…don’t tune in. Why should your (supposed) dislike of something affect my possible enjoyment of that same something?
What has them up in arms? Basically, the show will “glorify” Satan. That’s enough. Forget any show that glorifies sex (any soap opera or Shondaland show), violence (any show in the history of American television), or the supernatural (almost any show on television in the last 20 years). They’re a vocal minority that seeks to impose their will on the silent majority, and it’s laughable.
Really, it needs to stop.
There is a dearth of good television on today. Long-running shows have become tired and stale, and new shows fail to capture the imagination of the viewers. So we’ve now turned to comics to try to fill that void, and so far, we’re doing a pretty good job. The only modern comic book show that hasn’t been renewed that I can think of is Constantine, and that I lay at the producers of the Constantine movie—the public wasn’t ready for a character that was closer to the comics on tv, because it didn’t match the movie they saw.
I understand about attempting to boycott something because of your religious beliefs. But there also must come a time when you know when to pick your battles.
