So, Fox is continuing to mine the X-Men universe for movies, with the next film set to spin out of that universe being New Mutants.
I don’t know how I feel about it, to be honest.
Right now, all we have is a title. As a longtime Marvel fan, though, I’ve got reservations. However, without details, I’m going to be hard pressed to put a finger on why I have them.
I know that the Fox X-Men movies have been successful, and for that I’m grateful—to a point. In a perfect world, we’d get the X-Men rolled into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, basically making it one world. I’d love to see it. It won’t happen, but I’d love to see it. I want to see the comics translated more faithfully to film, and the best way to do that is if all the properties were under Marvel Studios for production.
Here’s a minor spoiler for those who haven’t yet seen Avengers 2: Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch aren’t mutants in that film. They’re “enhanced”. The reason for that is because there are no mutants (yet) in the MCU. All the mutants are in the Fox movies. Because Quicksilver wasn’t a mutant, he was allowed to be in the Avengers sequel.
What do I want in this newly announced film? Basically, a reason for being, besides the “hey, we can make a movie” reason we’re given for certain properties. (I’m looking at you, Green Lantern.)
What needs to be said in New Mutants that hasn’t already been said in the various X-Men films? What’s the timeline? (Remember: Patrick Stewart played Professor Xavier in the first three movies, as well as in Days of Future Past. Where are we going to be with Apocalypse? Where are we going to be with New Mutants? It’s an important question.) What story will there be that has to be told with these characters?
So I’m leery. There’s literally no information yet to make me even cautiously optimistic. I hope it’s going to be worth the time. That’s all I can really say about it right now.
