What comics do you collect?
When I was a kid, I was introduced to comics by my best friend at the time. This was around 3rd grade. It was a DC book. I don't know the title because the book had no cover. And no first page where the indicia is. I treasure that comic because it was my gateway. I treasure him because he was my gateway. Of course I watched the Superfriends as well as reruns of the Batman tv show, and there were other things that were very superhero-ish such as Space Ghost, the Blue Falcon and the like. But I was introduced to DC first.
I quickly left DC for Marvel. The characters just spoke to me. The powers made better sense, and there was always the sense that things were “real”, as opposed to DC. (I will grant that DC had better writers for a long time, and I have always said that I would love to see DC writers on Marvel books. I got my wish on a couple of occasions, and was blown away.)
I love superheroes. I'm not ashamed of this. The fantastic elements have always called to me. Not the storylines, but the fights and the different ways in which powers can be used. As a collector, my comics are dominated by superheroes, and that's mostly Marvel. When I want character development, I generally don't look at superheroes. I go to other types of books, like crime or mystery. (Sure, I could get both in certain comics, but not often.) Sometimes you can get it in science fiction, which can be close to superheroes without the trappings of costumes. (You'd be hard pressed to convince me that Star Wars isn't really a superhero tale, complete with costumes. The Force is a power, able to be used in different ways.)
Superheroes, science fiction, fantasy, sometimes some horror, crime, mystery. That's what I collect.
