Which creators do you avoid, and why?
There are certain creators who just don't work for me, either due to their personality or their work, or both.
I'm about to date myself.
When AOL had Marvel chat rooms (I know, I know, stop laughing), there were two writers in the room talking to fans. I had just decided to become a creator, and I went there looking for tips and advice, like a lot of others.
In the room were Frank Tieri and Paul Jenkins. Paul was very nice, answering questions with verve and wit. I remember laughing quite a few times as he spoke to everyone in the room. Very charming fellow.
Frank, on the other hand, wasn't anywhere near as nice. He basically groused the entire time he was there, even going so far to say that all the people in the room who were wanting to be writers were looking to take his job. I was very put off. However, I grew curious to see if his comics were enjoyable.
I saw him on Wolverine. He was at the tail end of a good run of Wolverine, numbering-wise, but I didn't enjoy the stories he was telling. Maybe it was just the character. So I went to Deadpool. While I saw the humor in the stories, I didn't think they were funny. Maybe it was the company. So I followed him over to Image to The Darkness. I felt like he had no understanding of just who Jackie Estacado was or how to tell a story with the character.
So it wasn't me, it was him.
(Yes, I followed Paul around, too, and I generally liked his stories. His Hulk was great, and I deeply admired what he did with the Sentry, to name a couple.)
There are others whom I just don't have a liking for, so I avoid them: Rob Liefeld and Whilce Portacio come to mind, as does Alan Moore.
Rob I don't follow because Rob.
Whilce...I loved his Wetworks concept (truly loved it), his art can be very hit-or-miss for me, so I just end up avoiding him most of the time.
Alan Moore I no longer follow because he's just not a nice guy. Brilliant, but has nothing kind to say about the comics being produced today, even though he says he doesn't read them. Like DC, he won't be getting any more of my money.
What about you?
