What’s your dream job in comics?
I’m talking about the one job you wish you had in all of comics.
I don’t think it’s easy to think of for a lot of us. I think a lot of us don’t really know what they want to do, if they could do anything and be successful at it. I think we’re so used to being unsuccessful in comics that the idea of finding success is foreign to us. But that doesn’t stop us from dreaming.
So what’s your dream job?
Mine is simple: I want to be the EIC of Marvel Comics.
Understand that I don’t have any idea as to what doing that job actually entails, besides making sure everyone is doing their jobs, that the stories are coming out on time, finding out why things don’t happen in a timely fashion, and making sure the books are at an acceptable standard for publication. They should also help guide the books in a certain direction, so the universe doesn’t go off the rails. The buck (generally) stops at the editor in chief. That’s the job that I want. Would I be any good at it? No idea. Would I love to work my way up to that position? You betcha. But as a dream job, that’s it.
Yes, creating new characters could be more lucrative in the long run, having a seminal run on a character might bring my name some longevity, but that’s not what I want. (Or, not just.) I was taught to go big or go home, and you can’t get much bigger (while remaining in editorial) than being the one who says yea or nay to stories.
Is it something that could actually happen? Definitely. I don’t count much as being out of the realm of possibility. I just have to put in more work and actually go after the a position with Marvel.
Again: what’s your dream job?
